Do you know that in Mongolia, the human population barely exceeds the horse population? What is even more interesting is that decades ago, the horse’s population was two times bigger than the human population, which tells a lot about how important horses are in Mongolians’ lives. There is no surprise why the longest horse race in the world takes place in Mongolia.
It is called the Naadam festival, an amazing spectacle where 180.000 horses race through the country, actually in 21 provinces. Naadam is a traditional festival in Mongolia. The festival is also locally termed “the three games of men”.
The games are Mongolian wrestling, horse racing, and archery, and are held throughout the country during midsummer. Women have started participating in the archery and girls in the horse-racing games, but not in Mongolian wrestling.
It is really great that the most important event in the country is allowing women to be part of it as well and I think it is a great example of female empowerment and for a lot of countries who are still struggling with gender inequality. I have to say that this is absolutely incredible and hopefully I will get the chance to experience it in real life. What do you think about this? Let us know in the comment section.
